{"id":17370,"date":"2024-04-27T09:41:28","date_gmt":"2024-04-27T07:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blueway.fr\/?p=17370"},"modified":"2024-07-02T22:16:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T20:16:30","slug":"data-hub-mdm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blueway.fr\/en\/blog\/data-hub-mdm","title":{"rendered":"Different types of data hub for MDM (Master Data Management)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Far from being a trivial matter for a business, <a href=\"\/en\/challenges\/master-data-repository\">implementing a single master data repository<\/a>&nbsp;poses significant technical and organisational challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common of these include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The difficulty in defining a single model<\/strong> for business data; models by nature depend on each department\u2019s use of the data in question<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The time needed to map data properly<\/strong> and define the central model, with its attributes and structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The supervision MDM requires, through appropriate data governance<\/strong>, which also takes time and effort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The significant impact of MDM on the internal organisation<\/strong>, which will have to review its use of data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As organisations vary so widely, <a href=\"\/en\/challenges\/master-data-management-mdm\">MDM (Master Data Management)<\/a> too takes different forms and a number of models exist. There are four main MDM hub models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The registry data hub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This relatively simple model to implement allows data to remain the property of source systems. The hub takes charge of removing duplicates and data cleansing, and these changes will then be cross-referenced within the hub to define a single version of the truth. Constant cross-referencing of sources makes it possible to obtain clean data, indexed using unique keys. Such data is not sent back to its source systems, and is available in read-only mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The advantages of the registry model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A single model is easily established from multiple source systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It eliminates any risk of data deletion from source systems which itself prevents any compliance or regulatory issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a non-intrusive model that is quick to implement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The disadvantages of the registry model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It does not result in one set of consolidated data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a fairly inefficient model where large data volumes are concerned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The consolidation data hub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With this MDM hub model, data is copied from source systems then consolidated into a golden record in the hub. It can then <a href=\"\/en\/blog\/data-integration\">be redistributed to applications<\/a>, or consumed directly by functional units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The golden record means trustworthy master data can be used, which makes reporting tasks much easier. Unlike the registry model, the consolidation model sends data back to source systems to enrich and update the data those systems have available. Applications and processes are consequently open to continuous improvement in their data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The advantages of the consolidation model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is true consolidation of data within the hub, enabling a comprehensive master data repository to be built<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The solution is both economic and reliable for all forms of reporting and analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is less dependent on source systems than the registry model, as data is centralised within the hub<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The disadvantages of the consolidation model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The sometimes lengthy periods between consolidations can mean data stored in the hub is obsolete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The coexistence data hub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A direct development from the previous model, the coexistence model also enables a golden record to be built by consolidation, then the cleansed data to be redistributed to applications, where it is then integrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the sources systems keep control over their data, the constant updating generally forces functional departments to change their methods.
